Hoteis Heritage Lisboa's latest project is located right on the city's main boulevard - the Avenida da Liberdade. The Heritage Av Liberdade Hotel is scheduled to open its doors in 2006.
It is a fully restored, late eighteenth century building, the decoration of which was entrusted to Miguel Câncio Martins - a Portuguese architect who is renowned for his work on mythical spaces like the Buddha Bar and Thiou in Paris, Strictly Hush in London and Man Ray in New York.
The whole of the building's original exterior has been retained, while the inside has been divided up in order to make it possible to create new public areas. The rooms are a combination of the modern and the traditional and vary in design in accordance with the layout of each floor.
In the lobby Câncio Martins has generated an atmosphere which recalls the Portuguese way of life, with a mixture of tradition and modernity inspired by Portugal's up-market town houses.
The idea was not to create the kind of universal décor that can be found anywhere in the world, but rather a personalised space that is truly urban, Lisbon and Portuguese.
In the words of Miguel Câncio Martins, "Everything is about balancing the old and the modern so as to keep it coherent."
